Why visit the Breckenridge Troll?
Visiting the Breckenridge Troll is a great way for families to get outdoors during their trip to Colorado. Not only is the landmark itself beautiful, but the journey to get there is family-friendly as well.
The troll is tucked away in a forest, and taking a leisurely walk through the woods to get there means that everyone can enjoy the stunning landscapes of Breck on the walk to it.
What is the Breckenridge Troll?
The Breckenridge Troll is a 15-foot tall sculpture made of wood situated along the Trollstigen Trail in Breck.
The Breckenridge Troll was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo who has built 50+ different trolls worldwide. (As of summer 2023, he’s even going on a USA trip to build new trolls in places like Washington, Vermont, and even a second one in Colorado!)
He mainly focuses on teaching people the importance of recycling. The troll’s name is Isak Heartstone, and he was built initially for the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts in the summer of 2018.
It was moved in 2019 because of the initial traffic that it received at its old location.
Where is the Breckenridge Troll?
As the name suggests, you can find Isak Heartstone in Breckenridge, Colorado – it’s not that far of a drive from Denver if you rent a car.
It’s located along the Trollstigen Trail. You can park right near the Stephen C. West Ice Arena parking lot if you’re lucky and get a spot that’s clearly marked for the Troll. Otherwise, park in town and use your phone to map how to get to the trailhead.
If you have an iPhone, you can also type “Breckenridge Troll” into your maps, and you should be able to find directions to the parking lot (this is what we did).

How to Find the Breckenridge Troll: Hiking Guide
Now, let’s dive into how to find the troll in Breckenridge. It’s a lot easier than you think!
You’ll want to start by parking near the trailhead. There is some parking specifically marked for the Troll here, but be sure to not park in the ice arena’s parking area. Just look closely at the signs. You’ll have better luck going in the evening like I did, or going in the early morning.
Wherever you park, try to leave your car there for the day, as Breckenridge is big on keeping pollution down. The town is very walkable and bikeable!
Then, follow the signs to begin the hike! It’s a fairly short hike, only about .25 miles and is flat. There’s a small wooden part of the trail that you’ll follow, and you’ll see signs for the troll along the way.
Before long, you’ll get to an opening where you will see Isak! He will definitely shock you a bit with the sheer size. Depending on the time of day that you go, you may be surrounded by other people who also did the hike and are waiting their turn to take a photo with him.
After you snap your photo (be kind and let others who were waiting first get their pics), then you can follow the exit portion of the trail to get back to the parking lot.
