Map of München Instagram Spots
Here’s a quick little map of all the best places to take a photo in Munich. You can use this map to guide yourself so you can plan out your trip a bit easier!
Munich Photography Tips
To get a perfect photo at the Instagrammable places in Munich, you’ll want to follow some of these tips.
These are the ones that I learned from my trip to the city, but of course, everyone’s circumstances are different!
Utilize Public Transportation
The public transportation in Munich is insanely fast. This means that you can actually rely on it, unlike many public transportation systems in the United States!
So, consider getting a day pass so you can get around the city quickly to take all your awesome photos.
Wake Up Early, or Don’t
You don’t necessarily have to wake up early to get great photos in Munich. All of the photos that I took were taken around midday, and yes, it was busy, but I don’t think it ruined my photos.
If you genuinely want nobody else in your photos at all, then be sure to wake up early.
Have a Plan
If there are certain places in the city that you know you want to visit, especially if you’re only spending a day in Munich, then make a plan ahead of time.
Even if it’s just a general list of about five places you know you want to visit, this will help you immensely when it comes to prioritizing your day.
The Best Munich Photo Spots
Siegestor
📍 Location: 80539 Munich, Germany

First up is Siegestor, a historic arch found in Munich. This arch is situated in the middle of a roundabout. Be extremely careful when getting a photo, especially if you want to go up to it or even under it to get a beautiful picture for Instagram.
The arch can easily be reached by public transportation.
Try not to visit during rush hour, or there will not be many opportunities to take a picture without tons of cars in front of it! I visited around 10 a.m., and it was perfect; there were not many cars, and I could take a picture up close as well.
As one of the most Instagrammable places in Munich, there are sometimes even some art sculptures placed in front of the arch. There was a “love” sculpture up there during my trip, which added a fun touch to my Instagram photos!
Rathaus
📍Location: Marienplatz 8, 80331 München, Germany

Another of the best München Instagram spots is Rathaus. This historic landmark is impossible to miss because of its location in Marienplatz. It has a daily show with the Glockenspiel at the same time every day where you can stand in the square and watch!
Truthfully, because you’ll most likely be taking a photo of Rathaus from below, you can visit at any time of day to get a great picture. This is especially true if you’ll be cropping the photo a bit to zoom in even more on the architecture of the building.
Because of its location to other spots on this list, it’ll be easy to double or even triple up to get quite a few pictures within an hour or two if you’re in a rush!
Eisbachwelle
📍Location: Prinzregentenstraße, 80538 München, Germany

Eisbachwelle may very well be the most incredible thing that you can see in all of Munich. It’s literally a spot on the river in the English Garden that’s entirely manmade, where people surf in the middle of the city!
If you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably miss it; but it’s one of the best-hidden gems in the city.
As one of the best Instagram spots in Munich, you honestly won’t want to miss this spot. It’s more of an adventure location, but it’s so worth it to get some cool action shots of whoever is surfing at the time.
From experience, the best time to go is sometime in the early morning before noon. There were about four surfers there when I went!
Marienplatz
📍Location: Marienplatz, 80331 München, Germany

Marienplatz is the main square in the city and is one of the best München Instagram spots.
Because it’s the city’s main plaza, it’s almost always busy, making it hard to take a picture when there aren’t others there.
Your best bet is to wake up right in the morning (like around sunrise) and race to the square for a picture if you want one without others in it.
The square itself is surrounded by gorgeous historic buildings, many of which are colored or patterned, making for a magnificent background that will surely stop the scroll on Instagram. There’s a beautiful building to take a photo next to, no matter where you look.
Endless Staircase Sculpture
📍Location: Ganghoferstraße 29A, 80339 München, Germany

Next is the Endless Staircase, another of the best München Instagram spots! This staircase is actually a sculpture by Olafur Eliasson. If you look closely, you’ll realize that the stairs technically lead to nowhere – thus making it endless.
The staircase itself is extremely Instagrammable. You could stand by it and take a photo like the one above, or even get fun with it and go underneath to see what other shapes and angles you can get by looking at it from different perspectives.
The staircase typically isn’t that busy, and since people aren’t allowed on it, you can almost always get a photo of it without many people in it.
Munich Residenz
📍Location: Residenzstraße 1, 80333 München, Germany

The Munich Residenz is a historic building right in the Old Town of the city that served as the home for the Wittelsbach family, who used to rule Bavaria. It’s the biggest palace in the entire country, located in a city, so it’s truly a sight to behold.
The best way to get great photos here is to go inside. There’s a small fee since you have to get a ticket to go in, but it’s well worth it. You’ll find tons of beautiful ceiling art, furniture, and more throughout the Munich Residenz.
This is a reasonably popular place to visit in the city, so try to visit early in the morning if you want to take photos without others in them, especially in the famous hallway that’s so popularly photographed online.
St. Peter’s Church
📍Location: Rindermarkt 1, 80331 München, Germany

Out of all the Instagram spots in Munich on this list, St. Peter’s Church is easily my favorite and is the one spot you absolutely can’t miss out on when visiting the city. The church itself dates back to the 13th century.
While you can take some great photos just from inside the church, what you’ll want to do is pay a small fee to go climb up the steps.
From the top, you’ll be able to see the entire city of Munich from above, including Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz, and even out to the Bavarian Alps on one side.
The climb to the top (and coming back down) only takes about an hour in total. It’s almost always busy at the top, so try to hike the stairs earlier in the morning. This also allows you to not feel as claustrophobic on the steps because the same steps are used to go up and down.
Olympiapark
📍Location: Spiridon-Louis-Ring 21, 80809 München, Germany

One of the best outdoor spots to take a picture that’ll stop the scroll in Munich is Olympiapark. In 1972, the Summer Olympics were held in Munich at this very spot, and now the place is open to the public to visit.
The area popularly holds events for the city of Munich, but it’s still a picturesque area to explore, and you can take some beautiful pictures there. You can easily get there by taking public transportation (including the bus, tram, or U-Bahn) or by car.
To get a beautiful view of Munich, go to the top of the Olympic Tower. The panoramic scene will take your breath away and provides a very different view than you’ll get from going to the top of St. Peter’s Church.
Bavarian State Opera
📍Location: Max-Joseph-Platz 2, 80539 München, Germany

Many people wouldn’t think to check out the Bavarian State Opera for an Instagram photo, which makes it a perfect spot to go to. The building is absolutely breathtaking. Each time you look closer at it, you’ll notice a new, intricate detail.
Use the building as a backdrop for your photo! A great spot to go is right in the front on the steps. Occasionally they may be blocked off like they are in the picture above, so keep that in mind when planning your trip to Munich.
You could also consider actually buying tickets to see the opera here, which is also highly suggested. The city’s opera dates back to the 1600s and is a must-see when visiting the city.
Viktualienmarkt
📍Location: Viktualienmarkt 3, 80331 München, Germany

Did somebody say food!? German food is incredible, no matter where you visit! The best place to grab a bite to eat that you can then pose with for a great Instagram photo is Vikutalienmarkt.
A market has been going on in this very spot in Marienplatz since the 1800s. Now, the stands are permanent and are open almost daily. You can try so many German delicacies here, including schnitzel, bratwurst, and more.
For a fun photo, consider getting a giant soft pretzel that you can pose with! Then, you can eat it after. Not only is the food tasty here, but it’s also super affordable compared to other restaurants in the city.
Most places at the market do take cards but consider carrying cash with you at all times, too, just in case.
English Garden
📍Location: Max-Halbe-Weg, 81925 München, Germany

Believe it or not, English Garden is known for being one of the largest parks located in a city worldwide. So, this is genuinely not a spot you’ll want to miss.
The park dates back to 1789 and is huge! Consider renting a bike to explore the park quicker, or you can walk around the city instead if you’d prefer. Throughout the park, you’ll find many great Munich Instagram spots, including the rotunda pictured above.
Be on the lookout for the Japanese teahouse, which is open seasonally. It’s a gorgeous piece of architecture that will look great in a photo, and you can also grab a cup of tea while you’re there!
Frauenkirche
📍Location: Frauenplatz 12, 80331 München, Germany

Frauenkirche, or the Church of Our Lady, is one München Instagram spot that you won’t want to miss out on. It’s definitely one of the more popular places to visit, even though it’s located only a short walk from Rathaus, Marienplatz, and St. Peter’s Church.
The church was built in the 15th century but, of course, had more construction and restoration since then. Inside the church, it’s breathtaking, especially with the gorgeous Gothic architecture. It’s relatively large and can hold around 20,000 people at a time.
Despite being bombed during World War II, Frauenkirche had one spot that many people like to see today survive: the Devil’s Footstep. This is a dark footprint on the ground that many people say is from the devil himself. Don’t miss out on this, one of the great Munich spots for a picture!
Schleissheim Palace
📍Location: 85764 Oberschleißheim, Germany

Despite being a place in Munich, many people overlook visiting this one. In fact, Schleissheim Palace is one of the more underrated destinations that seems to be frequented more by locals who know it as a hidden gem. Because of that, this is a great spot to go to take a picture.
The grounds themselves are breathtaking, and you’ll be able to get some beautiful photos of the gardens for Instagram, especially in the spring. You could also consider going on a guided tour to be able to see the interior of the building while also learning more about its history.
Theatine Church
📍Location: Salvatorplatz 2A, 80333 München, Germany

This bright yellow building is impossible to miss when walking the streets of Munich. Theatine Church is easily another of the underrated Munich destinations, but it’s still worth visiting. Who wouldn’t want a yellow building as the background of their photo? Talk about scroll-stopping!
The church was built in the 1600s and is built in the Baroque style of architecture. It’s a bit smaller than other churches in the city because it can only hold 400 people at a time. Be sure to stop by to see the interior, too, if you have the time, even though the best photo-taking opportunities are outside.
Old Town Hall
📍Location: Marienplatz 15, 80331 München, Germany

Since the New Town Hall was on this list, it’s worth including the Old Town Hall too. It’s impossible to miss it because it looks straight out of a storybook and is located in Marienplatz. It was built in 1480 and is still in remarkable condition today, thanks to the city’s upkeep.
The best place to take a photo of it is from the outside, but of course, since it’s in Marienplatz, you’ll want to get there early in the morning because this area gets crazy during the day. For a great Munich Instagram, get one of the outsides of the building.
Nymphenburg Palace
📍Location: Schloß Nymphenburg 1, 80638 München, Germany

Last but not least is the most popular palace to visit out of all München Instagram spots, Nymphenburg Palace! This castle was built in the 1600s in the Baroque style of architecture, and it has impeccable intricate details. There are even beautiful gold-colored fixtures on the exterior!
The gardens are the most beautiful part of the castle to visit if you’re on a budget and still want a great photo. It’s absolutely free to walk around them, but like other places on this list, get there early to avoid the crowds that come as the day goes on.
You could also consider visiting on a weekday since most people will visit from Friday to Sunday.
There’s a small fee to enter the palace too if you’d like interior pictures. These tickets cost less than ten euros, and you’ll be able to witness the inside of the castle for yourself.
Camera Equipment to Get the Perfect Shot
So, now that you know where to get the perfect photo with this list of München Instagram spots, it’s time you also knew the best equipment to get the job done! Here are some of the pieces of equipment that I use a lot in my photography and wholeheartedly recommend.
Camera Option 1: Canon EOS M100
First up is the Canon EOS M100, one of my favorite cameras for travel vlogging and photography. It has a flip screen, it’s not nearly as expensive as other cameras out there, and you can even buy it in a kit that comes with every accessory you’d need, including a tripod and extra storage cards.

Camera Option 2: Canon EOS M50
The Canon EOS M50 is the newest addition to my camera collection, and I’m obsessed with it. It’s small, lightweight, and extremely easy to carry, even with a small tripod like I prefer to have. It’s a bit pricier than the EOS M100, but it’s a great sophomore camera to have for both video and photos!

Crossbody Camera Strap
Your life will change when you switch from a neck strap to a crossbody strap. It makes holding your camera easier, and you can quickly grab it to take the perfect shot whenever you need it. Plus, this one is less than $20! It’s very similar to the one that I have.

Camera/iPhone Tripod
A camera tripod that’s handheld is perfect for taking Instagram pictures. This one, in particular, can also hold iPhones or Samsungs, making it ideal for running around the city. Plus, it’s small enough that you can fit it in a backpack without much hassle.

Prisms for Fun Shots
A prism can add a whole new level of fun to your Munich photography, especially on Instagram. You can buy one for less than $15, and it’s small enough to carry around. I have a whole set of different types of prisms and love them!
