As Denver locals, we’ve caught the sunset in Rocky Mountain National Park multiple times over the years. It’s our favorite spot to catch the sunrise anywhere near Denver.
That’s why we’ve compiled a list of some of the best spots to view a Rocky Mountain sunset. From romantic overlooks to family-friendly viewing vantage, there’s something for everyone.

Rocky Mountain National Park Sunset
Moraine Park
Moraine Park is one of the best places to catch a Rocky Mountain National Park sunset, and here’s why. This area of the park offers more than just a breathtaking view – it’s also home to some amazing wildlife!
Moraine Lake is located right along the popular Bear Lake Road corridor, and if you’re camping in Moraine Park Campground, this is an easy sunset spot.
Luckily, a timed entry reservation usually isn’t even needed to see the sunset here because they end around 6 pm.

Alpine Visitor Center
The Alpine Visitor Center is a must-see spot for anyone looking to experience the sunset in RMNP! Located at the highest point of Trail Ridge Road, it provides unparalleled views of the park and its wildlife.
From the observatory deck, you can take in the entire landscape, and you can even look out and usually see wildflowers. As if that weren’t enough, you can catch stunning views of the changing colors of the sky and its reflection on the peaks during sunset.
Keep in mind that because this is off Trail Ridge Road, you can only watch the sunset here during the summer months. The road is closed in the winter due to snow.
Forest Canyon Overlook
Catching the sunset at Forest Canyon Overlook is an experience unlike any other. The red and orange hues pierced through the fading sky create a stunning landscape that will leave you mesmerized.
This is another of the viewpoints that can be found right off Trail Ridge Road, so again, it’s only open during the summer months. Plan your time wisely because it is a 30-minute drive from the popular Beaver Meadows entrance.
Forest Canyon Overlook is also the most popular place to catch the sunset here, so be prepared to share the viewpoint with others.

Sheep Lakes
From here, you get unobstructed views of the sun setting behind the mountains, casting hues of pink and orange across the sky.
The lake itself provides a tranquil backdrop, with its beautiful surface reflecting the ever-changing colors as the sun goes down.
With this combination of beauty and serenity, no other place in the park can quite compare to Sheep Lakes for watching a Rocky Mountain sunset.
This is a really easy spot to catch the sunset if you’re already staying at the Aspenglen Campground. There is a parking lot nearby.
Fairview Curve
During sunset at Fairview Curve, you can enjoy nature at its best; the sky puts on a show of pinks, blues, and oranges, while the silhouette of mountains is framed by the setting sun.
From the Fairview Curve Overlook, guests can look out and see the Never Summer Range.
Fairview Curve is located right off Trail Ride Road, just like other places on this list, so just know that you can only catch the sunset here during the warm months.

Ute Trail
The Ute Trail is truly one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset at Rocky Mountain National Park. Along the trail, you can admire wildflower-filled meadows and alpine lakes, each with its own unique beauty.
As day turns to night and the sun dips below the horizon, watch as the sky comes alive in vibrant shades of pink and orange – a sight you won’t soon forget!
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful evening stroll or an unforgettable photo opportunity, make sure to add this trail to your list of must-see sights in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Ute Trail is off Trail Ridge Road. The trail does get rather cold at night, too. The best option for sunset is Ute Trail to Timberline Pass.
Sprague Lake
Not only does Sprague Lake offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains, but it is also a great place to take a stroll and admire the beauty of nature. The lake has a great trail for walking along the edge, and there are often plenty of animals around.
What really makes Sprague Lake stand out, however, is its view of the sun setting over the mountains. Whether you’re looking for a romantic evening or just want to enjoy some spectacular scenery, Sprague Lake has it all.
Many will argue that Sprague Lake is better for the sunrise, but we’ve caught the sunset at Sprague Lake before, and it’s never disappointed us if we wanted to catch it in a pinch.
Bear Lake
Bear Lake is one of the most beautiful and serene spots in Rocky Mountain National Park. With its crystal-clear waters reflecting the setting sun, you can truly appreciate the beauty and grandeur of nature at its finest.
Whether you’re here for a quick walk with a view or just to take in the scenery, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. The walk around Bear Lake is pretty flat, which is why it’s one of the more visited and accessible trails in Rocky Mountain.
Choose one of the benches along the way to sit and enjoy a view of the sunset.

Rock Cut
From Rock Cut, you can watch the sun slowly sinking behind the horizon, casting a golden hue on the surrounding mountains and lakes. Plus, with the vast panoramic views it offers, it’s great for a romantic evening out.
Rock Cut is located off Trail Ridge Road, meaning it’s only open in the summer months. The view from here is relatively similar to the one that you can get from Forest Canyon Overlook, but we’ve found that it’s not as busy as Forest Canyon.
Choose to stay in the parking lot or do the short half-mile trail that’s here. There are also bathrooms at this sunset spot.
Lilly Lake
Lilly Lake is an incredible and underrated spot for watching the sunset. From the lake, you can admire uninterrupted views of the majestic peaks, with their jagged peaks shining golden as the sun sets behind them.
The lake is also surrounded by lush forests and wildflowers that make it an unforgettable place to watch the sky turn from blue to orange and eventually purple.
And best of all, you don’t have to fight the crowds like you do at some of the more popular spots in Rocky Mountain National Park!
Lilly Lake is an easily accessible trail that’s less than a half-mile long.
Lake Irene
Lake Irene is the perfect spot to take in the beauty of the Rocky Mountain National Park sunset. It serves as a tranquil backdrop for one of nature’s most awe-inspiring moments—Marvel at the vibrant oranges and purples that stretch across the horizon and illuminate the lake’s waters.
Similar to Lilly Lake, Lake Irene is just a short 0.8-mile hike, so it’s a great spot to catch the sunset if you don’t want to go to more popular places, like Sprague Lake or Bear Lake.
