Is Neuschwanstein Castle worth visiting?

When you’re planning your trip to Germany, you might be thinking, “Is visiting Neuschwanstein Castle going to be worth it?” The short answer is YES! This castle is simply enchanting and welcomes visitors from all over the world every year.
Below, you’ll find even more reasons why adding this castle to your Germany bucket list will be worth it.
Pros of Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle

It has great historical significance.
No castle is complete without a deep and rich history. The same goes for Neuschwanstein! This castle was built in the 19th century for King Ludwig II.
He used it as his own personal residence and escape. The inspiration behind the castle came from Ludwig’s travels to other castles and palaces.
The architecture is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle makes it easy to be blown away by its architectural beauty. It’s the castle that is believed to have inspired Disney’s own castle. So, if the castle seems familiar to you, you might have seen it in Sleeping Beauty!
Everywhere you look, there is something beautiful to see. This castle has turrets, spires, and so many windows. It’s truly a grand structure.
During the construction of the castle, King Ludwig was inspired by the operas of Richard Wanger and even was there to approve each detail of the castle’s construction.

The scenery is unreal.
This castle sticks out on a cliff face soaring above southern Germany. It’s located in the snow-capped Bavarian Alps, which makes it that much more dramatic.
The castle itself is white in color, so in the winter snow, it looks straight out of a movie set.
Neuschwanstein is nestled on the side of a mountain with views of a lake below. This means it’s surrounded by trees of all kinds. During the autumn, the stark white of the castle shines through the yellow and orange colored trees all around.
No matter the season you visit the castle, you’ll get to travel through the stunning Alps, which are always worth seeing.
There are so many photo opportunities.
If you’re a content creator, you’re probably thinking, ‘But really, is Neuschwanstein Castle worth visiting?’ The answer is still yes!
The photos you’ll get not only of the castle itself but of the Alps and the landscapes leading up to the castle will satisfy your content-capturing efforts.
Plus, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the top Instagram spots in the country! Every picture you’ll leave with will be a postcard moment.

It’s an easy day trip by train from Munich.
It’s true! If you’re thinking about a Neuschwanstein Castle visit and you’re already in Munich, make sure you save time to visit here!
Many tourists wonder, “Can you visit Neuschwanstein Castle without a tour?” Yes! It’s easy and inexpensive to visit here by train.
Of course, you can book a tour. But a train allows you to spend as much time as you’d like exploring the castle and all of its beauty. This is what I did for my trip out and it’s completely manageable.
If you are interested in learning more about the history of the castle and its significance, booking a tour might be worth it. That way, you can get your questions answered by an expert and risk not missing anything worth seeing.

There are great local restaurants in the area.
Near the castle, there is a charming town called Fussen. This is where you can dine, relax, and even try traditional German food! If you’re coming from Munich, visiting Fussen is a great opportunity to explore a traditional and quaint German town.

If history is your thing, make sure you don’t miss adding Hohenschwangau to your itinerary. It was even King Ludwig’s childhood home!

There are great hiking opportunities.
Neuschwanstein Castle is worth it for the hiking opportunities alone. This castle is in the Alps! You can explore some of the lakes surrounding the castle as well as through the villages and towns in the area.
Of course, in the summer time, you can even make it to the top of some mountain peaks for incredible views.
You’ll truly have an unforgettable experience.

Cons of Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle
There’s limited access because the castle is unfinished.
If you didn’t know, the castle is unfinished. Although it will never truly be finished in its final form, that doesn’t mean it’s an active construction site! There is still plenty of beauty to admire, even if you can’t access every inch of the castle itself.
There can be huge crowds. It’s popular for a reason!
Anything as stunning as Neuschwanstein Castle is going to be a bit busy. But the best way to avoid the crowds is to visit during the off-season.
Make sure to do your research and check the weather! Going on an overcast day might warrant fewer crowds (and can make for some really dramatic photos!).
Another way to avoid crowds is to go early in the morning. Being some of the first people at the castle can help you make sure you get all the photos you want!

It can be hard to get tickets.
Make sure you purchase your tickets online and in advance. Even if you’re visiting on a whim, make sure to book online before you arrive! Otherwise, you’ll have to spend your time waiting in a long line when you arrive for a ticket purchase.
If you’re visiting with multiple people, it might be a good idea to have one person purchase all of the tickets for your group. That way, you know you can all enter together and at the same time.
There’s a climb involved.
Make sure you dress appropriately when visiting the castle! You might be tempted to wear your most stylish shoes, but just make sure they are comfortable as there is a hike involved to get up to the castle.
If that’s not something you’re interested in, there are usually other ways to visit Neuschwanstein. For example, most of the time, there is a horse-drawn carriage ride to the top.
However, make sure to check the weather! Snowy or bad weather can cause these other modes of transport to be shut down, leaving you with the only option of hiking.
Don’t be too intimidated by the hike, though. Just picture it now, you’re ascending up, and out of nowhere, you’re met with a stunning castle nestled in the Alps!
