If you’re reading this article, you’re wanting to know the best time to visit San Francisco, one of my favorite cities in the United States.
San Francisco is a city full of cultural, scenic, and entertaining wonders. You won’t be bored on a visit to Northern California’s best.
However, if you know anything about San Fran, fog and rain have a constant presence in the city, and some times of the year are worse than others.
When is the best time to visit San Francisco?

The best time to visit San Francisco will be the fall season. Fall has just as many activities and events to do in the summer, but with better weather and fewer crowds.
It also has less precipitation than spring and winter. The fall colors accent the unique city buildings beautifully, and the ocean seems to be on its best behavior. You can’t go wrong with San Francisco in the fall.
Best time to go to San Francisco by type:

- Fewest crowds: Tourism in San Francisco is heaviest in the summer and drops significantly in the fall. November is the best month to visit San Francisco to avoid the crowds.
- Best for festivals/events: Festival season takes place in the summer, but you’ll be able to find some really cool festivals and events happening all year round in San Francisco.
- Best weather: San Fran takes a while to heat up after the wet winters, so the best time of year to visit San francisco for the weather is from August to November.

Visiting San Francisco by the Season
Spring in San Francisco

San Francisco in the spring is filled with the smell of flowers and the pavement after rain. So yes, prepare for some rain if you visit during this season, especially in March.
The temperatures also won’t reach much higher than 65 degrees. But if you’re not scared of a bit of rain, this is a great time to visit San Francisco. The crowds won’t be as thick as they will in the summer, so you may get some of the city to yourself.
Pros & Cons of Visiting San Francisco in the Spring:
- Pro: Due to the lower number of people visiting, you can snag hotel rooms at a lower price.
- Con: The rain can put a bit of a damper (literally) on your outdoor activities.
- Pro: This is the best time to visit San Francisco for flower lovers. Cherry blossoms, magnolias, and more can be seen all over the city.
San Francisco Spring Activities:
- With all this talk of flowers, the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park is a must for spring in San Fran.
- Attend the Flower Bulb Festival and the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown.
- Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in San Francisco! This holiday is celebrated with food trucks, music, and dance performances. This festival is very community oriented.
- On the other hand, Carnaval is an extensive festival that celebrates Latin American, Caribbean, and African cultures with more food, music, and performances. This occurs in the last week of May.
Tips for Visiting in the Spring:
- When thinking about what to pack for Spring in San Francisco, don’t forget a rain jacket and an umbrella- you’ll need them.
- Make sure your camera is ready to snap beautiful pictures of the spring flowers.
Summer in San Francisco

Tourism is at its peak during summertime in San Francisco. But I wouldn’t say this is the peak time to visit the city.
The temperatures are about the same as in the spring, staying around 60 to 70 degrees, and the rains subside. But, with the increased tourism comes an increase of lively festivals and events, so you certainly won’t be bored while visiting in the summer!
Pros & Cons of Visiting San Francisco in the Summer:
- Con: Although the weather gets a little warmer and the rains halt for the season, prevalent fog and chilly winds make the weather far from perfect.
- Pro: San Francisco comes alive with its visitors and has an abundance of activities to participate in.
- Con: Since this is the busy season, hotel prices rise immensely, making it one of the most expensive times to visit the city.
San Francisco Summer Activities:
- Bike around Golden Gate Park. Grab your helmet and explore the 1,000 acres of the park on wheels.
- Check out some of the city’s annual festivals. Try escaping from Alcatraz and participating in the triathlon that starts at the prison, or listen to smooth jazz at the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival.
- Explore the city’s best museums. Learn and have fun at the Academy of Sciences and enjoy inspiring art pieces at the de Young Museum.
Tips for Visiting in the Summer:
- Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you can trek around San Francisco without a jacket. You’ll want to have one just in case those chilly winds kick up.
- Book your hotels and attractions early. If you wait too long, prices might go up or be entirely booked.
Fall in San Francisco

If you come to San Francisco in the fall, it’ll be one of those trips you won’t be able to stop thinking about. September and October temperatures are warmer than the summer temps. It feels a little backward, I know.
The summer tourist boom also calms down, and this season has the lowest number of visitors than any other.
Pros & Cons of Visiting San Francisco in the Fall:
- Pro: Temperatures stay around 70 to 75 degrees making it the best time to visit San Francisco’s nature side.
- Con: Due to the oncoming winter, the days are a little shorter, so there is less time to enjoy the city.
- Pro: Everyone goes back to school when September hits, making this the best time to go to San Francisco and have it all to yourself.
San Francisco Fall Activities:
- Now that the weather is so nice, you can enjoy the natural wonders in and around San Francisco. Spend some time at the beach, go on a few hikes, or bask in the sun at one of the city’s many parks.
- This is the best time of year to visit San Francisco for chocolate. The Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival is held every year in September.
- Get in the spooky season spirit with a night tour at Alcatraz, or book a Haunt SF Ghost tour to expose the eerie history of the city.
- Take in the various fall colors in San Francisco on Tilden Park’s trails.
- See the sites! Visit the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pink Ladies, and Coit Tower while the weather is warm.
Tips for Visiting in the Fall:
- Bring a few layers to combat the seaside winds if you plan to spend time on the beach.
- The best time to visit San Francisco to get the best fall colors will be in the middle of the season.
Winter in San Francisco

Although the city is beautiful in any season, winter may not be the best time to visit San Francisco. The temperatures drop to a regular 50 degrees, which isn’t too bad, but the constant wind and rain can make it feel colder than it is.
But the number of tourists is still much lower than during the busy season, so the crowds aren’t overwhelming.
Pros & Cons of Visiting San Francisco in the Winter:
- Pro: Because of the lack of tourists, hotel prices have dropped for the season., You may be able to find a screaming deal.
- Con: The vibrant greenery and palette of flowers have diminished for the winter, so visitors during this season miss out on many of the best parts of San Francisco.
- Pro: Instead of having to spread out your time between San Fran’s great outdoors and the various museums and attractions inside, the winter weather can sometimes make your choice.
- Con: There is also a decrease in the number of events happening at this time of year.
San Francisco Winter Activities:
- Partake in a winter classic and buy a few tickets to attend The Nutcracker put on by SF’s ballet.
- Get festive and watch the Union Square Tree Lighting Festival and/or the Fireworks Over The Bay.
- If you’re a baseball fan, winter may be the best time to visit San Francisco. You can celebrate the SF Giants at the fan fest in February. You may come home with a few autographs and pictures of your favorite players.
Tips for Visiting in the Winter:
- Winter is another season you’ll want to make sure you have a raincoat and an umbrella.
Although I say fall is the best time to visit San Francisco, there is something to enjoy during every season. San Fran is a hub for culture, the arts, nature, entertainment, and landmarks. Any chance you get to go you should take!
