Europe has some of the most spectacular fairytale castles in the world. I’ve had the opportunity to visit more than ten fairytale castles in Europe during my time studying abroad, and it’s so incredible to be able to take a step back in time and experience them firsthand.
Hearing stories from other travelers who are looking for fun and exciting places to visit is always an adventure, too. With that said, here are some of the best fairytale castles in Europe that you should add to your bucket list!
Best Fairytale Castles in Germany
Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany
Visiting the 19th-century Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany is a must for any traveler who wants to visit a fairytale castle. Not only have I visited this incredible castle firsthand, but it’s also said to have inspired Walt Disney when he created Cinderellas’s iconic castle!
Set against the backdrop of the Bavarian Alps, Neuschwanstein is one of the most classic and recognizable castles in all of Europe. Although it may seem like something from a fairy tale, this royal palace is open to visitors and is still as stunning as ever.
The best way to get there is to take a day trip from nearby Munich. You can book a tour if you’d like, or do the trip on your own using Germany’s great buses and trains that are available. We personally opted to do it on our own!
Whether you’re looking for an awe-inspiring experience or just to take some picturesque photos, Neuschwanstein Castle should be top on your list when traveling in Germany.

Hohenschwangau Castle, Germany
Visiting Hohenschwangau Castle in Germany is a must-do for any traveler looking to get a glimpse into the past. I’ve visited it firsthand while studying abroad, and I can say that it’s definitely worth a visit!
Located right near Neuschwanstein Castle, this was the childhood home of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and it’s best to visit it from nearby Munich. The castle offers stunning views, great history and culture, and plenty of interesting stories.
The castle itself has a bright orange-yellow facade that looks beautiful year-round. The day we visited, it was springtime, but there was snow, which provided an incredible juxtaposition for photos.
Plus, there are plenty of things to do around the area while exploring the quaint town of Fussen – so make sure you plan your trip just right!

Alhambra, Spain
Do you know what is the most visited site in Spain? Here is a hint: it is a castle.
It is the Alhambra in Granada, of course. Magnificent Alhambra is the top-visited site in Spain. It receives over two million visitors each year.
And for a good reason. Spectacular Alhambra is among the best fairytale castles in Europe. Romans built a fort there first. But Moors made a unique masterpiece palace from it in the 8th century. Catholic Monarchs made some architectural changes and Renaissance-style additions to it later in the 15th century.
Today Alhambra exhibits a unique mix of styles. As such, it is among the most beautiful castles in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Gorgeous Alhambra is in the city of Granada in Andalusia in southern Spain. Andalusia is famous for its beauty and rich cultural and historical heritage. Granada, Seville, and Cordoba in Andalusia are some of the most beautiful cities in Spain.

Royal Palace of Madrid, Spain
The Royal Palace of Madrid is worth visiting and easily accessible, situated in the heart of Spain’s vibrant capital city. Built on the site of the old Alcázar, a medieval fortress that was converted into a palace during the reign of Phillip II in 1561, it is one of the largest palaces in Western Europe and even the world. It has spectacularly stood through centuries of Spanish history, and to this day it is one of the few official residences of a Head of State that are open to the public.
Upon stepping into the palace, you will be immediately struck by its grandeur and opulence. The Royal Armoury, which is said to be the largest European collection along with the Vienna collection, is the most visited room and not to be missed.
After exploring the castle’s majestic halls and chambers, end your visit with a stroll through the Moro Gardens. This area is filled with lush greenery and even offers guests an opportunity to have a drink on the terrace.
Another great way to experience the Royal Palace of Madrid is by attending a ‘Relay of the Guard’ ceremony. Admission to this experience is free, and open until capacity is reached. This event takes place on the first Wednesday of each month with some exceptions.
During certain days, visiting the palace is free of charge: Mondays to Thursdays from 5-7pm, making it an ideal spot for a dreamy evening adventure. Otherwise, consult the full schedule of entrance to the palace here and plan your visit accordingly.

Best Fairytale Castles in Portugal
Pena Palace, Portugal
Pena National Palace is a mythical place on top of a hill in Sintra in Portugal. It is a beautiful and colorful palace with various styles, Manueline, Moorish, and Neo-Gothic. It is also classified World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
But besides the fascinating style of the castle, the interior doesn’t disappoint. It is still decorated and furnished according to the monarchical period, with luscious furniture, painted walls, and amazing stuccos. Furthermore, it is surrounded by dense forest with lakes, trails, and the Chalet of the Countess of Edla. It has so much to explore.
Furthermore, it has an intriguing history. D. Fernando II, the Consort King of the Queen Mary II of Portugal, built it. He bought the abandoned area in Sintra with his personal fortune and constructed a palace. It soon became the summer residence of the Royal family. When he died, the castle belonged to his second wife, Elise Hensler(after Queen Mary II died). She later sold the palace to the Portuguese State and the monarchy.
It is definitely a palace you should visit when traveling to Lisbon. You can get there by car or train. To reach the palace, you must go on foot or by taxi from the center of Sintra, as private cars aren’t allowed.
Be aware that Pena Palace is a very touristy site, so we suggest buying tickets in advance.

Best Fairytale Castles in France
Château de Chenonceau, France
The Château de Chenonceau is one of the most breathtaking castles in Europe. You’ll find this spectacular castle in France’s Loire Valley. The Château de Chenonceau is about a 3-hour drive from Paris, and there is a large parking area at the site. You can also take the train from Paris through Tours– the Chenonceau train station is right next to the parking area.
It’s known as the Ladies’ Castle for the famous women who inhabited this château. Firstly, Diane de Poitiers, who as the mistress of King Henry II was given the castle as a gift. After the king’s death, Queen Catherine de’ Medici moved in and forced her rival out.
One of the most beautiful aspects of the Château de Chenonceau is its gallery, which extends across the Cher River. You’ll want to get a photo of the reflections of the gorgeous architecture in the river – it is straight out of a fairy tale! Inside the castle, the long gallery features an elegant checkerboard pattern of black and white tiles.
Be sure to take a turn around the gardens – each of the ladies created her own magnificent garden, so they reflect different styles. But for the best views of the gardens, take an amazing Loire Valley hot air balloon flight!

Visiting the Palace of Versailles in Paris is an experience that all travelers should have. I’ve been there firsthand, so I can attest to its magical charm. Truthfully, it’s fairly easy to get there from nearby Paris utilizing public transportation, but you can also book a tour if you’d rather have an experienced guide with you along the way.
Versailles has quite the history, a lot having to do with the French Revolution. The castle dates back to the 17th century when it was built by King Louis XIV. The castle has more than 2000 rooms!
To get the most out of your visit, make sure to book your ticket ahead of time and try to get to the palace early in the day – the lines can be quite long if you don’t plan ahead.
If you’re on a budget, you can still have a wonderful time by skipping the interior tour and exploring the gardens instead. Trust me; it’s even more breathtaking than seeing the inside of the castle. You won’t regret it!

Scaligero Castle, Italy
Scaligero Castle is definitely one of the best fairytale castles in Europe. This is a castle that can be found on a peninsula in Lake Garda in Italy.
The castle is located at the entrance of the town of Sirmione. Visitors of Sirmione have to go through the gate of the castle to enter the historic part of town. It stands between the town and the rest of the peninsula that is connected to the mainland.
The castle was built in the 14th century when the House of Della Scale ruled Verona and the surrounding region. Throughout the years it kept being an important fortress until the Unification of Italy.
Nowadays, many tourists visit the castle and it is possible to get inside the castle as well.
Scaligero Castle is very beautiful because of its design and the used materials. Also, the color of the stone looks very beautiful together with the bright blue color of the water.
It is very easy to get to the castle and the town of Sirmione by car as there is a large parking space near the castle, and there are buses that can take you close to the castle as well. From the bus stop and the parking space, it is easy to get to the castle on foot.

Doge’s Palace, Italy
Visiting Doge’s Palace in Venice is a must-do for any traveler looking to explore the city. I’ve been lucky enough to visit this incredible palace on my trip to Italy, and I can’t say enough about its beauty!
The exterior of the building alone is breathtaking, with its intricate carvings and impressive architecture that hearkens back to the 14th century when it was first constructed. It was not only an important seat of government as it served as the residence of the Doge of Venice, but also an architectural wonder that still stands today!
Pricing to get into Doge’s Palace varies, but is usually around €30 for adults. Seniors, children, and students get lower prices.
Exploring Doge’s Palace is a great opportunity for travelers to get a glimpse into a different era while marveling at its timeless beauty.

Best Fairytale Castles in the Czech Republic
Prague Castle, Czech Republic
Prague Castle is located in the heart of the Czech capital, towering above the River Vltava in close vicinity to the equally famous Charles Bridge.
To get to Prague Castle, it’s best to take tram number 22 or 23 and get off at a stop called “Pražský hrad.” Alternatively, you can walk from the historical center, crossing the Charles Bridge along the way.
Prague Castle is the number one landmark in Prague and visiting it is almost obligatory. At the very least, everyone should take a leisurely stroll through the Prague Castle complex, which is free of charge. The complex consists of several buildings, with St. Vitus Cathedral being the most prominent and defining Prague’s famous silhouette.
Nowadays, visitors can even climb to one of the Cathedral’s towers and enjoy not only the view of the entire Prague Castle area but also the incredible vistas of Prague itself. If you purchase a ticket, you can explore the interiors of the Old Royal Palace, St. Vitus Cathedral, St. George’s Basilica, and Golden Lane with Daliborka Tower.
Prague Castle has even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records due to its size. The individual structures were built and added to over the centuries, but the oldest ones date back to the 10th century.
A visit to Prague Castle can easily take up half a day, allowing ample time to wander around and explore its extensive gardens. The combination of architectural beauty and historical significance makes Prague Castle an absolute must-visit destination.

Best Fairytale Castles in Lithuania
Trakai Castle, Lithuania
Trakai Island Castle is a stunning 14th century castle located on an island on Lake Gavle, about a 45 minute drive from Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Trakai is an area inhabited by people , and was once considered to be the capital of Lithuania, before Vilnius took over the title in 1991.
Trakai is the traditional home of the Karaim people, who have inhabited the area since the 1300s.
You can get to Trakai by car from Vilnius in about 30 minutes, or you can take public transit. You can choose from taking a bus from the main Vilnius bus terminal, or a train which you can book online at LTG Link. The journey via public transit to Trakai will take 35-40 minutes depending on traffic and the time of your visit. You can buy your tickets to the castle online in advance, or at the gate.
While you’re at the Trakai Castle, you can either do a guided or self-guided tour. You will walk around the medieval staircases, rooms and the beautiful courtyards, taking pictures and imaging and learning about life at the castle from another time. There is also a museum inside the castle where you can learn more about the history of Trakai, and view artifacts and photos of the castle from previous generations.
You feel just like royalty as you enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake, and surrounding land from the medieval castle windows.
While you’re in Trakai, be sure to try kibinai, a traditional, local staple. There are often food trucks outside of the castle gates selling these delicious pastries, often filled with meat, cheese or vegetables.

Craigievar Castle, Scotland
Craigievar Castle is an amazing sight to behold for any traveler. I had the pleasure of visiting it on my trip to Scotland, and I can assure you that the pictures don’t do it justice. It’s a beautiful pink castle surrounded by rolling hills and scenic views.
It was originally built in the 16th century and has been home to a family who lived there well through the 20th century. The castle itself is full of rich history and stories that can’t be found anywhere else – making it an unforgettable experience!
This is easily one of the best fairytale castles in Europe and is truly a bit of a hidden gem. Even some locals don’t know that this beautiful castle exists! You can pay a fee to go inside the castle, which will also get you a discount to nearby Balmoral Castle, another must-visit.

Balmoral Castle, Scotland
Scotland is a must-see destination for any traveler, and no trip is complete without a visit to Balmoral Castle, the stunning home of the British Royal Family.
At this royal residence in Scotland’s highlands, visitors can explore the picturesque grounds and learn more about its unique heritage — apart from times when the royals are in residence. During these occasions, the castle is closed to visitors, providing an exclusive opportunity for the Royal Family to enjoy their private estate.
I had the privilege of visiting Balmoral Castle on my recent trip to Scotland. I was truly amazed by its grandeur and majesty — a feeling that could only be experienced first-hand!
The easiest way to get there is by car unless you plan on doing a tour throughout this part of Scotland that includes a visit to the castle. Visiting Balmoral Castle was one of the highlights of my Scotland trip – it’s truly one of the best fairytale castles in Europe.

Palace of Holyroodhouse, Scotland
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is a must-visit for any explorer visiting Edinburgh. This grand estate is the official Scottish residence of the British monarch, and its history dates back much further. In fact, it was originally built as a monastery in 1128.
Today, visitors can take in its beautiful example of Neoclassical architecture. From its ornate interior to stunning gardens, Holyroodhouse is sure to leave any traveler speechless! Whether you’re interested in a piece of history or are just seeking an awe-inspiring experience, don’t miss this one-of-a-kind destination.
Keep in mind that sometimes it is closed to visitors if there are important happenings at the palace. For instance, it was actually closed during my visit, unfortunately! I did snap a photo at the gate though, which can be seen above.
You can save some money by booking your ticket online in advance. Expect to pay around £20 for an adult ticket, and about half that for students and children.

Braemar Castle, Scotland
Braemar Castle is a must-see destination for any traveler visiting Scotland. I had the pleasure of visiting it during my trip, and it is located in Aberdeenshire, making it an easy addition to your itinerary.
It was built in the 17th century and remains one of the most impressive examples of architecture from that era in Scotland. The town of Braemar itself is quite famous, and perhaps even more so, for hosting the most famous highland games. This annual event, known as the Braemar Gathering, has attracted royalty, including Queen Elizabeth herself!
With its beautiful grounds and engaging history, Braemar Castle should definitely be on your list for your next Scottish adventure!

Urquhart Castle is a must-see for anyone traveling to Scotland. Located on the banks of beautiful Loch Ness, it’s easy to see why this castle has been attracting visitors for centuries!
If you’re looking for a truly immersive experience, I highly recommend booking a boat tour from one of the nearby towns to get there – you won’t regret it! When you arrive, take your time and explore the grounds – there’s a lovely concession spot and souvenir shop at the castle to grab some refreshments and maybe pick up a memento of your visit.
Whether you just want an afternoon of exploring or plan on spending an entire day taking in Urquhart Castle’s historical beauty, it’s sure to be an unforgettable adventure.
And remember that this is Scotland, so it’s possible that it will be rainy during your visit, but that makes the castle even more fun to visit. It rained on my boat ride over, and I loved how moody it made everything!

Książ Castle is located in the southwestern part of Poland and is one of the most famous castle in the country.
The castle is in the Owl Mountain Rang and is easily accessible via road. From the city center of Walbrzych, you can take a short drive, or if you’re up for an adventure, the region offers well-marked hiking trails leading to the castle.
Ksiaz Castle is the third-largest castle in Poland and is enveloped in history and mystery.
Originally built in the 13th century, Książ Castle has seen Bohemian kings, Prussian nobility, and even the Nazi occupation during World War II.
Visitors to Książ Castle have a multitude of engaging activities to partake in. Tours within the castle are the most popular including the night tour. The castle also offers underground tours.
The inside castle is quite intricately decorated and the gardens are beautifully maintained. There are several housing structures, several of which have been turned into hotels for guests who can stay on the property overnight.

Bled Castle, Slovenia
Another beautiful fairytale castle to explore in Europe is Bled Castle, which is located in the Eastern European country Slovenia. This small yet charming castle overlooks incredibly gorgeous Lake Bled, which is one of the most visited parts of the country.
And on top of being located in an unbelievably beautiful area, Bled Castle is believed to be one of the oldest castles in Europe. The castle has been mentioned in documents as early as 1011 CE! So, if you choose to visit, you’ll be able to connect with stories and history dating back to the Middle Ages.
For those keen on visiting, you’ll need to first get to the city of Bled by either car or public transport. Once in the small town, you can easily walk to Lake Bled. Then, from the lake, you’ll embark on a 25-minute hike to the castle. At the top, you’ll be able to take in sweeping views of the area, explore the castle’s museum, and learn about the area’s fascinating history.

Carrickfergus Castle, Northern Ireland
Carrickfergus Castle in Northern Ireland is all about a blend of interesting history, well-restored Norman architecture, and stunning landscapes. This is one of the best-preserved medieval structures in the country, making it an integral part of the Northern Ireland road trip.
Carrickfergus Castle is only a few minutes away from Carrickfergus railway station easily and is located on the northern shore of Belfast Lough in Carrickfergus County. Dating back to 1177, this fortification has played an important role in military operations for more than 750 years. After changing hands from the Scottish, Irish, English, and French armies, it was handed over to the Government of Northern Ireland.
Do you how they turned Carrickfergus Castle from a simple military structure to one of the best castles in Europe? Different Victorian as well as other architectural features were removed to preserve its original structure. The banqueting hall was restored and now hosts different historical displays. These exhibits will give you a glimpse of life in the medieval era and have cannons dating back to the 17th and 19th centuries.

When visiting Ireland and feeling like a splurge, consider booking a stay at Ashford Castle.
Near the village of Cong and in County Galway, this massive and impressive castle originally built in the 13th Century and expanded in the hundreds of years since, sits on a beautiful 350-acre estate that you can explore as a complimentary perk of your stay.
Though, if you find the nightly rate for a room too pricey, know you can still visit the grounds for a small per-person fee, currently 5 Euros per adult.
Ashford Castle is steeped in history and boasts stunning medieval and Victorian architecture that will inspire and wow you.
The castle has changed ownership countless times and has even been owned by the Guinness family. Most recently—Ashford Castle has been beautifully restored, renovated, and reimagined into a luxury five-star 83-room hotel.
The best way to get to the castle is by driving. The route takes approximately 40 minutes from Galway and two hours and 45 minutes from Dublin.
When you visit, know you can do much more than stay overnight or stroll the grounds.
Plan ahead, and you can pre-book an activity such as learning the art of falconry at the castle’s Ireland School of Falconry, horseback ride, lake cruise on Lough Corrib, or indulge in a spot of afternoon tea in the castle’s sumptuous dining area. Just be sure to book ahead, as reservations are strongly recommended and required for non-overnight guests.

Blarney Castle, Ireland
Visiting Blarney Castle is a great way to spend a day if you want a trip from Dublin! I can attest to this firsthand, having spent a semester studying abroad in Dublin. The grounds of the castle are stunning and full of lush green gardens and hidden nooks.
Plus, when visiting the castle, don’t forget to kiss the famous Blarney Stone! A fun way to ensure good luck and great fortune for the rest of your travels.
One of the most unique parts of Blarney Castle, when we visited, was the Poison Garden. Be sure to grab a map when you enter so that you’re able to see all that the castle has to offer. We were amazed because we didn’t realize there was so much to explore!
Blarney Castle was built in the 15th century, though forts did stand in its very spot well before that. It was built by the MacCarthy of Muskerry dynasty and is right by Cork, a must-visit Irish city.

Dublin Castle, Ireland
Visiting Dublin Castle is an incredible experience for travelers. Located right in the heart of Dublin, I’ve been there myself while studying abroad in this beautiful city.
It’s conveniently located pretty centrally within the city, and entry for adults is only €8 – a great deal for such an engaging historical experience. The castle itself dates back to the 13th and has seen many changes over centuries; it was even a prison for a while!
Visiting Dublin Castle is an absolute must-see for anyone exploring this amazing city. If you’re staying in downtown Dublin, it’s fairly easy to walk to this location or to take the bus throughout the city.
Fun fact: the castle is located where it is because it’s the highest point in Dublin! Up until 1922, this was also where the British government was seated in Ireland.

Best Fairytale Castles in England
Blenheim Palace, England
One of the most stunning castles in The Cotswolds in England, Blenheim Palace is the only palace in the UK not occupied by a member of the royal family. Built in the 18th Century as a gift from Queen Anne to John Churchill the 1st Duke of Marlborough for winning the Battle of Blenheim, Blenheim Palace really is a fairy tale castle in Europe and a must visit on any trip to England.
The former home of historic Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Blenheim Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can learn all about the endeavours of Britain’s most famous Prime Minister.
Visitors can take a free guided tour to learn the history of the rooms and visit the exhibitions and the formal palace gardens. Tours are also available to visit the ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ of the palace, in a Downton Abbey type way, and see the inner workings of the palace which is still lived in today.
Blenheim Palace still belongs to the Churchill Family and can be visited throughout the year. The easiest way to get to Blenheim Palace is to drive and parking is free, entry costs £22.50 for adults and £11.50 for children.

I’ve been to Kensington Palace on my trip to London, and it was an incredible experience. Built in the 17th century, the palace is a stunning historical landmark that instantly takes visitors back in time.
It’s right next to Kensington Gardens, and there are lots of wonderful things to see and do there. Inside the palace, you can find many interesting artifacts related to its long history. The current Duke and Duchess of Cambridge still live there today.
It’s an absolute must-see for anyone visiting London! During my trip, there were a lot of Princess Diana’s dresses on display. They do have a few rotating exhibits that can make the trip slightly different every time that you go back.
On average, it costs about £25.40 per adult ticket to go inside. Children, seniors, and students have different costs associated that are cheaper.

Buckingham Palace, England
Buckingham Palace is an essential part of any fairytale castle list – it’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to make the most of their trip to London! My own experience of visiting was quite remarkable; although it’s incredibly touristy, I found it to be a very worthwhile outing.
Built in the 18th century, and located in the City of Westminster, this grand palace is where the monarch of the United Kingdom resides. Don’t forget to take your camera so you can capture some truly remarkable photos and share them with your friends back home!
When visiting, don’t miss out on the Changing of The King’s Guard. This occurs about every day at 10:45 am and takes around 45 minutes. Try to get there early to get a good spot because so many people come to watch, especially in the summer months.
Explore all its grandeur while taking in its illustrious history – this is one location that you won’t want to miss out on.

Tower of London, England
The Tower of London is a must-see destination for any traveler venturing to the great city of London. Not only does it offer visitors a chance to explore one of the world’s most historic castles, but it’s also brimming with unique artifacts and historical relics.
Parts of this magnificent castle were built dating all the way back to the 11th century! It’s considered a fortress – its walls reaching up into vast, majestic towers which overlook the River Thames.
Step inside and feel like you’ve been transported back in time. There’s something truly special about standing within these ancient walls that simply can’t be found anywhere else. This is an experience you won’t want to miss!
I’ve visited myself and recommend putting aside at least 2-3 hours in order to fully explore everything here. Be sure to also see the Crown Jewels!
