Sunsets are one of Earth’s greatest gifts to all the people inhabiting the planet, but beach sunsets? They hold a special place in that list. The best sunset spots in San Diego have to be some of my favorite places to watch the sunset in the entire world.

The rays of light bouncing off the water, turning everything a hazy orange, the slow fade into blue and purple, the sound of the waves as the sun descends. It is truly magical.

Best Sunset Spots in San Diego CA

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is located on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, south of Ocean Beach Pier. It has “sunset” in the name, so you would do well betting on a good sunset here.

Park in the Sunset Cliffs parking lot at least a little early to get a good spot. If you come a couple hours early, you can head down to the beach, swim, surf, or lounge until the sun starts to dip. Head back up to the parking lot to Pappy’s Point to see the sunset of a lifetime.

If you can’t make it to the Sunset Cliffs parking lot in time, never fear! Continue down the road, and you’ll find another parking lot.

This is one of the best San Diego sunset spots to bring a date!

Windansea Beach

Originally named after the Windansea Hotel that burned down in the 1940s, Windansea Beach still welcomes visitors to its shores.

You can spend the day testing the waves for some expert surfing or lounging on the beach. When sunset hits, you can make your way to the sandstone cliffs to sit and watch the dusky colors fill the sky.

To reach the cliffs, you’ll need to go down a set of stairs located on the north side of the parking lot. Just follow the photographers and surfers that frequent the spot!

Oceanside Pier

Just 40 minutes from the city is one of the best sunset spots in San Diego.

Oceanside juts out over 1900 feet into the pacific ocean, allowing you to see the California coastline from a completely different angle.

This way, instead of watching the sunset touch the glittering waves from the shore, you can be amidst those waves without even getting wet.

Although if you stand too close to the edge, you might get splashed a time or two.

Oceanside Pier is also great for fishing, people-watching, and enjoying street performers.

La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is one of San Diego’s most visited beaches and one of the best spots in the city for swimming, diving, and snorkeling.

The crystal clear blue waters of the cove are filled with wildlife, and some creatures even make their way up to the beach! You can spot sea lions and seals lounging on the sand just like you are.

Sandstone cliffs guard the beach, which makes an absolutely stellar sight. Stairs connect the parking lot to the sand.

This is known by many as the best place to watch the sunset in San Diego, so if you want a good spot you’ll need to get there early.

Torrey Pines

Torrey Pines is a nature preserve where you can get away from all the busyness of California, but see its beauty in top condition. 

The landscape of hills, trees, and the ocean provides an idyllic canvas for the sun to paint its sunset colors on.

This area is also a US historic aviation site, where paragliders and hang gliders are always soaring through the sky. You can book a lesson to learn while waiting for the sunset if you like.

If flying isn’t your thing, then grab a late lunch at the Cliffhanger Cafe (open until 4pm). Then go searching for the best spot to watch the sunset.

Coronado Beach

Coronado Beach has a couple of the best sunset spots in San Diego.

Starting with Ocean Boulevard, locals and visitors flock to the street nightly to see the sunset make a silhouette out of the palm trees. Behind the boulevard is a mansion-lined street so you can admire the beautiful houses as well.

To have a drink or snack to go along with your sunset show, you might want to watch the Hotel Del Coronado’s boardwalk or the Stake Chophouse and Bar.

Or for an unforgettable date night, rent a gondola, and your guide will row you through the canals of the Coronado Cays as the sun sets.

Cabrillo National Monument

Cabrillo National Monument is at the tip of Point Loma, so even without the sunset, the views are jaw-dropping.

But with the sunset, its beauty and mystique will have you coming back every night to see it again.

Again, it helps to show up a couple hours early to make sure you’ve got the ideal spot for the show. At Cabrillo, you can watch on top of the cliffs by the Old Point Loma Lighthouse or descend down the cliffs and watch it frame the sandstone and the sea.

Either way, you won’t be disappointed. This is one of the San Diego sunset spots you can never go wrong with.

Mission Beach Boardwalk

Mission Beach Boardwalk is a 3.5-mile concrete walkway that California pedestrians and cyclists just love.

Now because it is so popular, there will be a lot of people around for the sunset as well. If you don’t mind the crowds, then Mission Beach is definitely one of the best sunset spots in San Diego.

To add a little bit more thrill to your sunset view, you can walk down the boardwalk until you reach Belmont Park. Stop off here, ride a few rides, and watch the lights flicker on as the sun sets.

Ocean Beach Pier

Grab your fishing pole and a bucket and set up to fish and watch the sunset on Ocean Beach Pier.

Originally named the San Diego Fishing Pier, OB Pier is the longest concrete pier on the west coast. Herrings flock the edges of the pier, and there is no limit to how many you can catch! You also do not need a fishing license to fish here.

So fishermen, rejoice! Throw in a line and enjoy the sunset at one of the best sunset places in San Diego.

Palisades Park

Palisades Park is one of the ebay sunset spots in San Diego because it presents an unobstructed view of the shoreline.

You’ll find this park at the end of the Pacific Beach Boardwalk featuring a large grassy section perfect for reading, games, exercise, and lounging. You’ll see the sunset sweep over the ocean and even reach southward to the pier.

There are also plenty of walkways down to the sand if you want to take a sunset beachside walk. It’s a beautiful place you’ll want to come back to again and again.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is larger than New York City’s Central Park, so you know it houses many of the best San Diego sunset spots.

From luscious gardens to the San Diego Zoo, the oranges and reds or a sunset will touch the far reaches of the Balboa, but some places are certainly better than others to see the sky.

Seeing the California Tower with the sunset in the distance is one of my favorite San Diego views. Although the tower is only open until 4 pm (where you can climb all 125 steps to the top), the sun setting behind it is definitely a sight worth seeing.

Or climb to the top to look for the best place to sit and watch the sunset within Balboa Park.

Altitude Sky Lounge

Looking for the most luxurious place for a date night in San Diego? The Altitude Sky Lounge will knock your date’s socks off.

Looking over Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park, there’s always a view in the Altitude Sky Lounge. Although, it’s not the best place to catch an out-of-the-park ball. But being at the lounge during its sunset happy hour is a homerun if you ask me.

Crystal Pier on Pacific Beach

Walk to the end of Crystal Pier as the sun is going down to get an almost panoramic view of the sea and the hazy dusk sky. You’ll be greeted by many other sunset chasers who know where the best places to watch the sunset in San Diego are.

Crystal Pier was at one time home to an amusement park, and some relics of those days still remain. You can even stay in the quaint cottages right on the pier. These little homes are the perfect place to head back to after the sun slips into the ocean.
