One Day in Valencia Itinerary

A Spirited Morning at Mercado Central (Central Market)

Start your day right in the heart of Valencia with an early visit to the vibrant Mercado Central. This is where the city comes alive in a glorious burst of color, sounds, and, most importantly, flavors!

Imagine walking through bustling aisles filled with the freshest produce, the smell of strong, earthy coffee and sweet pastries wafting through the air. Rows of delicious jamón, colorful fruits, cheeses, and much more are lovingly displayed by the local vendors. This place isn’t just a market; it’s an authentic Spanish experience!

Take the time to enjoy a traditional Valencian breakfast here or pick up some goodies for a snack a bit later on (or a great souvenir!). The architecture is also a feast for the eyes, with its impressive mix of gothic and modernist designs, it’s a photographer’s dream!

Majestic Elegance at the Silk Exchange (La Lonja de la Seda)

Just a short walk from the market, your next stop is the awe-inspiring Silk Exchange. As one of the most representative examples of Gothic civil architecture in all of Europe, La Lonja de la Seda will whisk you back to Valencia’s prosperous mercantile age.

The main room, Sala de Contratación, with its twisted columns that rise like palm trees, is an absolute must-see. And, did I mention it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site? You’ll definitely want to leave some time for pictures here.

Experience History at Valencia Cathedral

Next on your list is the magnificent Valencia Cathedral, a stunning piece of work that took centuries to complete. Each door of the cathedral tells a different story – from the Romanesque Puerta del Palau to the gothic Puerta de los Apóstoles, and the baroque Puerta de los Hierros.

The highlight, however, is the Chapel of the Holy Grail. Yes, that Holy Grail! It’s said to house the authentic chalice used by Jesus at the Last Supper.

So whether you’re a history buff, a Da Vinci Code fan, or simply appreciate beautiful architecture, this place is a must-visit.

Relax at Plaza Redonda

After the intensity of the cathedral, take a breather at the serene and lovely Plaza Redonda. This circular plaza, surrounded by old buildings, is as charming as it gets. The quaint little shops around the plaza are perfect for finding unique souvenirs. This is the perfect place to visit with one day in Valencia.

At the center, there’s a pretty fountain where you can sit and enjoy some people watching. Oh, and the plaza also has an old-fashioned haberdashery where you can buy beautiful Valencian lace. It’s a throwback to a gentler time!

Refresh Yourself at Horchateria Santa Catalina

To round off your morning, step into Horchateria Santa Catalina. Valencia’s famous drink, horchata, is a refreshing, sweet beverage made from tiger nuts and is absolutely delicious!

This café has been serving up the delightful treat since the 18th century, so they certainly know what they’re doing. Couple your horchata with a warm “fartón” (a long, soft pastry) for the ultimate Valencian snack experience.

This is the sweetest possible end to your morning and prepares you for an exciting afternoon ahead!

Lunchtime Fiesta in the Old Town

Oh, the joys of Spanish lunch! The Old Town, or Ciutat Vella, has a plethora of delightful restaurants tucked away in its charming streets.

What should you eat? The answer is a no-brainer: paella! After all, you’re in the birthplace of this world-renowned dish.

Look for a local spot serving “Paella Valenciana,” traditionally made with rabbit, chicken, beans, and a hint of rosemary. The enticing aroma, the delightful texture, the riot of flavors… this is a culinary experience that you simply mustn’t miss.

The beauty of Valencia’s Old Town is in its surprises. One moment, you’re admiring the street art, and the next, you’re stepping into a historic church or stumbling upon a tiny boutique filled with handmade crafts.

But it’s not all about the past; the city has a vibrant modern side too. The stunning frescoes, the gilded altar, and the serene ambiance create a unique spiritual experience. Don’t forget to look for the image of the Virgin – it’s a beautiful sculpture with a fascinating story behind it.

Celebrate the Afternoon at Cafe de las Horas

Now that you’ve immersed yourself in the historic charm of the city with one day in Valencia, it’s time for a little refreshment. Enter Cafe de las Horas, a vibrant and theatrical spot that’s famous for its “Agua de Valencia” – a potent mix of cava, orange juice, vodka, and gin.

Yes, you heard it right! This sweet and sparkling cocktail is the perfect pick-me-up for the afternoon. Enjoy it amidst the baroque decorations of the café, and you’ll feel like you’re in a lush, extravagant Valencia of a different era.

Continue with a High at Torres de Serranos

Your journey around Valencia wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Torres de Serranos. These towers were once part of the ancient city wall and are one of the twelve gates that once guarded the city.

Today, they stand tall and proud, a reminder of the city’s rich and vibrant history. As you stand beneath these imposing structures, you can almost feel the whispers of the past echoing around you.

But that’s not all! For those with a bit of an adventurous spirit, you can climb to the top of these towers. As you ascend the winding staircase, you can take a moment to appreciate the detailed craftsmanship that has stood the test of time.

Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Valencia. Trust me, it’s an experience that will make you fall in love with this city even more.

Early Evening Stroll through Turia Gardens

As the day begins to cool down, there’s nothing more magical than a leisurely stroll through the expansive Turia Gardens. This massive green space used to be a riverbed of the Turia River but is now Valencia’s lung and the locals’ preferred spot for jogging, cycling, picnics, and general relaxation.

Along its 9 km stretch, you’ll come across picturesque bridges, whimsical sculptures, beautiful fountains, and even a giant Gulliver play park for the little ones (or the young at heart!).

As you wander along the meandering paths, you’ll see why this place is a cherished part of life in Valencia. There’s a certain tranquility that hangs in the air, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration.

Sunset at the City of Arts and Sciences

The Turia Gardens lead you to the otherworldly City of Arts and Sciences – a true masterpiece of modern architecture. (It’s also one of the most famous buildings in Spain.)

This architectural marvel is a testament to Valencia’s forward-thinking spirit and is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. The complex, designed by the famous Santiago Calatrava, features an opera house, planetarium, science museum, and Europe’s largest oceanographic aquarium.

Comprising a planetarium, an opera house, a science museum, and an open-air oceanographic park, it’s an impressive spectacle. During the day, the white structures contrast beautifully against the azure Spanish sky. But the real magic happens as the sun begins to set.

The buildings, with their futuristic shapes, are beautifully illuminated, reflecting off the surrounding pools to create a mesmerizing tableau. It’s like stepping into a futuristic world, right here in Valencia. It’s definitely worth taking a moment to sit down and admire the view.

Watch as the sky changes colors, from a vibrant orange to a soft pink, then a deep purple. It’s a sunset experience like no other and a moment you’ll treasure long after your Valencia trip is over.

Dinner Fiesta in Ruzafa

Just when you think your day in Valencia can’t possibly get any better, it’s time to discover Ruzafa – Valencia’s hippest neighborhood. By day, Ruzafa is a colorful and lively district with a village-like charm. By night, it transforms into a culinary paradise.

Boasting a variety of dining establishments ranging from trendy gastro bars to traditional bodegas, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to food options. And, of course, being in Spain, the ambiance is nothing short of spectacular.
