Travel in Delhi

There are several modes of transportation options available in Delhi that one can choose from.

Auto-Rickshaws or Rickshaws

One of the most commonly used transport options in Delhi is autorickshaws and rickshaws that are used for short distances. A rickshaw is a two-wheeled passenger vehicle that is drawn by a person and can cost you anywhere between 50 INR and 100 INR for a 4 km ride.

Autorickshaw, on the other hand, is a motorized version of a cycle rickshaw and is quicker in transporting you from place to place. An autorickshaw can cost you around 70 – 150 INR for 4 km but you will end up reaching your destination quicker.

Metro

One of the most convenient and budget-friendly modes of transportation in Delhi is the Metro. Almost the entire city is connected by the metro line and the ticket price usually varies between 12 and 60 INR, depending on the distance traveled.

If you are on a budget and don’t want the hassle of bargaining with rickshaw or autorickshaw pullers then the metro is the best choice for you.

Cabs

You also have the option of booking cabs from applications such as Uber, Ola, etc. in Delhi. This way, you already know the price of your journey and don’t have to face any unpleasant experience. Moreover, you can get sharing options available to reduce the cost of your journey.

Places to Visit in Delhi

India Gate

One of the top places to visit in Delhi, India Gate is a 138 feet tall memorial that was built during the British era. This memorial commemorates the death of the soldiers of the British Indian Army who died during the First World War.

There is also an Amar Jawan Jyoti installed here in the memory of the soldiers that died during the Bangladesh Liberation War. All the soldier names are inscribed on this memorial and you will find locals enjoying picnic around the gardens here.  

Red Fort

Red Fort, or Lal Quila, was built by Shah Jahan and was used as the royal residence for the Mughal Empire. Made from red sandstone, this fort looks absolutely gorgeous and used to be decorated with jewels and artwork earlier.

One can enjoy a visit to this fort now and learn more about the Mughal history in India.

Qutub Minar

A popular UNESCO World Heritage Site, Qutub Minar is the tallest brick minaret in the world. So, if you love exploring historical and architectural gems then this is one of the top places to visit in Delhi. The complex is home to some other beautiful structures as well and one can enjoy an evening stroll here and watch the setting sun from here.

Agrasen Ki Baoli

One of my personal favorite places to visit in Delhi is the Agrasen Ki Baoli. This historical stepwell has 108 steps and looks absolutely gorgeous with its old stone construction. You will find this is a popular spot for Instagram photographs and instantly transports you into a historical era.

Delhi Haat

If you wish to take a look into the different cultures that can be found in India then Delhi Haat is the perfect place to visit. This is a food and craft bazaar so, you will find an exhibition set by all the states of India here. From silk clothing to brassware, you will find it all here.

And if you feel hungry, then you can gorge on the Gujarati Dhokla, Tibetan momos, and a lot more here.

Lodhi Garden

Lodhi Garden is a park that is located in New Delhi and is home to the architectural works of Lodis. Protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, you will find here several tombs such as Mohammed Shah’s Tomb, Shisha Gumbad, Tomb of Sikander Lodi, and so on.

If you are an architecture enthusiast, then you will love to visit this garden and admire the beautiful works of the Lodis. You can visit here in the morning or the evening to enjoy the golden light for some amazing photographs as well.

Chandni Chowk

One of the most popular and oldest markets in Delhi, Chandni Chowk was built in the 17^th century by Shah Jahan. This is one of the largest wholesale markets in India and gives a glimpse into old Delhi. You can buy souvenirs from here, interact with locals, try the street food, and even explore local attractions such as the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and so on.

Accommodation in Delhi

There are several amazing hotels in Delhi where one can book their stay for a comfortable trip. A few hotels worth mentioning for a stay in Delhi are Radisson Blu, JW Mariott, Ginger Hotel, and so on.

Make sure that you select a hotel that is close to a metro or to the attractions that you are planning to visit to save on the transportation cost.

Hostels

Apart from hotels, you will also find several hostels for backpackers and budget travelers available in Delhi. These hostels charge anywhere between 250 and 1000 INR for a night for a bed and are a perfect way to meet fellow travelers.

Airbnb

Finally, if you are planning for a longer stay in Delhi and are looking for some privacy, then you have several Airbnbs available in Delhi as well. Always Fix the Price Before Hiring

One of the most important things to remember while traveling in Delhi is that you should always verbally discuss the price of a ride or an object before you hire or buy it. Some vendors are out to food tourists so it is always good to decide on the price beforehand.

Ask Locals For the Right Price

Make sure that you check with your hostel owner or other local friends about the correct pricing for an item or an experience. Most people will try to charge you more because you are a tourist so knowing the right pricing beforehand will help you weed out the people who are just trying to take advantage of you.

Be Ready to Bargain

Bargaining is a part of life in Delhi. So, from souvenirs to rickshaw rides, you will have to bargain for it all. Don’t agree on the price directly as most often than not, you will be charged double of what it actually costs.

Avoid Going Alone At Night To Dark Places

There are a few places in Delhi that are unsafe at night so it would be better to not go alone here. If you do plan to go, then take a cab and inform your friends or hotel owner about your whereabouts to be on the safe side.

Carry Sanitizer With You At All Times

Delhi is messy and dirty so if you wish to avoid getting sick then do carry a hand sanitizer at all times. You will easily need it on rides, while eating, and just exploring around in Delhi.

Be Careful Of Your Belongings

Finally, it is quite to get your items stolen while on the road in Delhi so make sure you are careful. Keep your belongings close to you and be vigilant at all times.
