Public transit is our suggestion for a reasonably-priced, fuss-free transport option. It takes under an hour for the S-Bahn S1 (westbound) or S8 (eastbound) to drop you off right at München Hauptbahnhof (Munich Central Station)!
No fuss, no transfers, make sure to buy an Airport-City day ticket ahead of time. Then, once you arrive in Munich, grab your bags and follow the signs to the airport train station–it’s as easy as that.
This option does cost a little more than the Lufthansa Express Bus, but the Airport-City day ticket includes city center transportation from when you buy your ticket through to the next morning, so you can use it for your first few hours of sightseeing. Plus, the S-bahn has a broader timetable than the bus.
Best Options to Get From the Munich Airport to City Center
There are four main ways you can get from Munich airport to the city center: train, rental car, express bus, and Taxi/Uber. We’ll dive into each in more detail below, using München Hauptbahnhof as our general city center destination.
S-Bahn from Munich Airport to City Center
Deutsche Bahn’s S-Bahn is a great option in terms of cost and ease of use. You can pick up a single-day ticket called the Single-Tageskarte or Airport-City Day ticket that’s especially for transit from the airport and around central Munich from the time of purchase until 6 AM the next day.
This ticket costs just under 16 Euro each way, and you can get it in the DB app, the MVV app, on the MVV website, or at a ticket machine.
From the airport, take the S1 westward or the S8 eastward to get to central Munich. Journeys take under an hour, and trains run every ten minutes, so there’s no problem if you miss one…that means no need to rush from your plane or baggage claim!
This is the best option for budget-conscious travelers with transit needs at nearly all hours who don’t have a great deal of luggage on hand. When I visited Munich, this is what I used, and I found it the perfect choice as a student studying abroad.
Lufthansa Express Bus from Munich Airport to City Center
The Lufthansa Express Bus is a comfortable, affordable, and non-stop transit option between Munich airport and the city center, available to you no matter what airline you fly.
While its hours are not as broad as the S-Bahn and there is no ticket expansion to allow for additional transit around the city center, the fare is lower–about 20 Euro if you buy a round trip ticket–and many consider it to be a much more comfortable ride, due to the lower chances of overcrowding.
The buses are available every twenty minutes just outside of each terminal, offer climate control and free wi-fi, plus a driver to lend a hand with loading up your luggage. Simply order your tickets ahead of time and relax.
This is the best option for travelers with larger luggage, sporting equipment, baby strollers, and the like.
Taxi or Uber from Munich Airport to City Center
A convenient option for getting from Munich Airport to the downtown area of the city at just about any hour is to hire a taxi or request an Uber. If you time it right, you get to head out to the designated taxi and ride-share area of your airport terminal and hop right into a private car with a driver to help you out with loading your luggage.
Then you get driven right to your accommodation, no need to worry about train stations or bus stops and hauling your luggage to where you’re staying. It doesn’t get much more convenient and comfortable than that!
Convenience has a price tag, though, and it does start at about 50 euros minimum. Depending on weather, distance, the number of people you have with you, and other factors, this can go right up past 100 euros.
And if you have a large party of travelers, you’ll have to likely book multiple vehicles, making the cost escalate further. Lastly, luggage space may be limited.
This is the best option for those who need door-to-door service, have an average amount of luggage, and for whom cost is not much of a concern.
Driving a Rental Car from Munich Airport to City Center
Sometimes, you just want the ultimate flexibility and freedom of being able to drive yourself around, and so you rent a car.
No worries about schedules and crowding; you get to pull up right at your door, and in good traffic, it only takes forty minutes to get from the Munich Airport to the city center.
However, this can end up being the most expensive option of all. Prices can start at around 45 Euros a day–this can vary due to your country of residence, availability, how close to pick up you’re booking, car size, and other factors–plus gas and other associated driving costs must be considered.
You’ll also be required to have certain paperwork, and you likely won’t be familiar with road rules in the country you’re visiting. It can be a nerve-wracking experience, but for some, the ultimate convenience of renting a car is worth the costs.
Renting a car is the best option for those seeking full flexibility and convenience in their transit options and for whom cost is not much of a concern.
