Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, didn't expect to find its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who still lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Reluctant allies, Wanderer and Melanie set off to search for the man they both love.
Cover Review: I think this cover is alright. I really like the eye because that’s exactly what I pictured the eye looking like on the humans who were being taken over by aliens.
Main Character: Melanie Stryder / Wanderer
In The Host by Stephanie Meyer, we follow Melanie Stryder who happens to be one of the last few humans on Earth. Melanie lives in a world where Earth was invaded by an alien species of souls who take over the bodies of humans.
The souls claim to have done this for the human’s own good because of all the hate and war. The souls were just trying to make Earth a safer place. I’m not so sure that they were thinking of the lives they were taking.
One day while doing a raid for food, Melanie is attacked by another guy. She thinks that he’s initially not human, but it turns out that he is. This guy’s name is Jared, and Melanie and Jared end up falling in love. Melanie must also care for her younger brother.
Melanie ended up just about killing herself and a soul took over her body. The soul’s name is Wanderer and she is just about the most famous soul there is because she has lived on 7 different planets as 7 different species. She got the name because she has practically “wandered” while trying to find the right place for her to fit in.
Since Melanie already knew about what the souls do, she was prepared for this to happen. She was resistant, and she constantly talks to Wanderer inside their head.
Wanderer thinks that something is wrong, so she gets help. Of course, her only option is to stick it out or get a new body to host. She ends up sticking it through because she has deep feelings that she can’t control for both Jared and Melanie’s brother. She goes on a search to try to find the both of them with the helpful guide of Melanie.
Throughout the novel, Melanie and Wanderer become close friends. I really liked how the novel started out with Wanderer already hosting Melanie. I also really loved how we were told small sections of Melanie’s story and they were scattered throughout the novel in small flashbacks.
We were learning everything at the same time that Wanderer was. It was also pretty interesting because Wanderer really evolved as a person. She never was really sympathetic to the species that she hosted until she met Melanie. By the end of the novel, Wanderer was much more caring and rebellious.
The Host is definitely one of my new favorite books and I’ll be sure to see the movie once it comes out. I hope that it ends up being a book series because I would love to dive back into the world that Meyer created. This was definitely nothing like Twilight.
