What’re your thoughts on changing a blog name? | Discussion

SO. Though I don’t talk about it a whole bunch, I actually studied abroad last semester in Dublin. This opened up a whole other side of me and made me realize that I have another major interest in travel. In fact, it made me realize that maybe that’s why I even love reading, because reading allows me to travel to any place at any time with so many great characters.

Since being abroad, I started an Instagram travel account, called @WanderlustAdventurist, created so many travel vlogs and travel diaries on a YouTube channel with my friend called Roaming Roomies, and even started a travel blog called Wanderlust Adventurist.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love blogging and Instagramming and all that jazz, but I hate having two different blogs, twitters, and Instagram accounts to stay caught up with. It’s a lot of work. So, it got me thinking… what if I morphed this into a book blog and travel blog? They are two of my favorite hobbies and interests and I don’t see that going away anytime in the near (or far) future.

BUT. Downright Dystopian wouldn’t be a suitable name anymore. I have thought about if my blog name is even suitable at all since I stopped reading dystopians so often a few years ago, but I have had this blog name since July 2012. I did some thinking and brainstorming with friends and family and essentially settled on the possibility of a blog titled “Volumes & Voyages”. It’s catchy and still conveys that it is about books and travel, so I think it’s perfect.

However, I would really love your opinions! Do you think it’s too late to change a blog title? Would you still read my blog if it were about books and travel? Essentially, this would mean 2 posts a week on books (like it is now) plus two a week on travel, so it’d just mean posting more often. What are your opinions on changing a blog name? Let me know in the comments below!

No, I don’t think it’s ever too late to change a blog title (as long as you give your readers a heads up about it….which you just did!) I would still read this site if it was about travel and books. More posts is a good thing, and Volumes & Voyages is a cute name. πŸ™‚

Thank you so much, that’s so great to hear! πŸ™‚ I’d definitely do a whole post about changing my blog name and the decisions behind it if I were to follow through with the idea. πŸ™‚

  2. That’s a challenge, especially when you have a domain already. I think the biggest challenge is getting people to come to your blog with the new name. But I don’t think there’s a problem with adding travel to your blog, with or without a name change.

  3. It is hard to know how changing your blog name will go. I get where you are coming from, though. It would be easier to manage social media and keep the accounts to a minimum. I like the travel idea. Maybe if there is something that goes with the “Downright ” aspect of your blog name will make the transition easier. πŸ™‚

  4. So first off, I LOVE the idea of having it be both about travel AND books (and I kind of adore Volumes & Voyages!). Honestly, I think it might be an easier transition than you think! I mean- everyone would still be subscribed I assume, as long as you plan on keeping your current blog and not starting from scratch, and as long as you reminded people in those first couple posts, I don’t think it would be a big deal. Even social media and such, just keep “formerly Downright Dystopian” in your profiles for a bit! Especially since you don’t really read dystopian that much anymore, I don’t see any sense keeping a name that no longer feels fitting for you! I see that you use Nose Graze, it may be worth dropping a quick email to Ashley to see how complicated it would be? She’d be better able to tell you what the level of headache is hah. Good luck!!

Volumes and Voyages sounds fantastic! I love the idea of a blog with books and travel — mostly because I love travel and books too! But seriously. you’ve picked two very popular topics, and two very different types of audiences, which broadens your audience.

  7. I love reading for the same reason! I can’t afford to travel, so reading lets me learn about places without spending a ton of money. I don’t think it’s too late for a name change. I’d like to hear about your adventures.

  8. I think we all change a little from the time we first start blogging. I know I’ve debated changing my name and look. I think with you, it’s the perfect time to do it when you haven’t done a ton with the other blog and can combine posts fairly easily. Plus travelling and reading go together really well. I think almost all of us readers love both even if we can’t travel – we could live vicariously through you. Lol! That’s also an AWESOME name! Go for it!

  9. I personally don’t think it’s ever too late for a name change, if you feel like this new name would fit you and your new brand better, go for it! With a heads-up to everyone in your first posts and on social media, to inform who you formerly were, so they’re not too confused, I think that the transition should go smoothly and in the end, you’ll be so much happier with it all and with handling one coherent identity everywhere, too πŸ™‚ Best of luck for it all, looking forward to it!! πŸ™‚ x

  10. I think a blog is made to represent who you are and that is ever changing. If you want to change your blog and have it about two of your passions than my advice is go for it. A lot of people do rebranding cause they feel that their blog doesn’t represent who they are anymore.

I’d love to read about your traveling adventures and your reviews. I also adore the new name! If you can, could you write a post about your experience studying abroad? I plan to study abroad somewhere in Asia, so the experiences won’t exactly be the same, but I’d love to hear your insights and tips.

  12. I really love the name Volumes and Voyages, and I agree with everyone else who says it’s never too late to change your blog name. I also love the idea of writing about your travels. I know several book bloggers who also write about their trips and I always enjoy those posts so much.

  13. To echo everyone else: It is definitely not too late to change your blog name. Your interests have shifted since 2012, so it makes sense to change the name to fit your current interests. None of us want you to be stressed out either and if combining your interests of books and travel into this blog eases that stress and makes you happy, that’s what really matters. All of us so far seem to be more than happy to read whatever posts you come up with (whether it be books or travel) so you’ll still have us as readers! πŸ™‚

I don’t think it’s too late to change. Volumes and Voyages sounds great, or you could go with a variation on your existing name like someone else suggested, but I think either way you’d be good, since you’re going to let people know about the change. I changed my blog name at one point and was so glad I did. And I love reading travel stuff, I would totally keep reading! I think it’s a great idea. πŸ™‚

  15. Changing your blog name is always a bit of an issue but I would say it’s never too late to do it. As long as you let everyone know about it it’s fine. You have that initial transition period but it can definitely be done. I get your reasoning as well, two social media’s would be tough, I can barely cope with one. I say go for it and I love the potential new name, very fitting.

  16. Shannon says:

It’s never too late to change! I think a lot of book lovers would be really eager to read more travel posts, and if amalgamating your blogs would make you happier, I say go for it! πŸ™‚

  17. I agree with everyone above! It’s never too late! Just make sure you let all of your current followers know if you change the address or something so we can continue to find your posts. πŸ™‚
