Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison.
When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.
Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed.
But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.

Glitter by Aprilynne Pike originally caught my eye because of the idea that it takes place in an eighteenth-century castle yet it’s also in the future. How awesome is that!?!

The setting is seriously amazing. I know I just mentioned it, but seriously, I need to say more about it. Basically the castle of Versailles is where the royals live in the future, yet everyone inside the castle acts and dresses like it’s the eighteenth-century. That whole idea literally just blows my mind because it’s genius. How has no author thought of this before?!

There’s so much intrigue around every single corner. There’s all this mystery about how Dani ended up being the betrothed of the king and then there’s also all this mystery surrounding why Dani wants to leave the castle so badly. Also, her mother is just so interesting. I always thought there was something up with her.

I’ve never watched Breaking Bad, but I definitely get the reference. Dani decides to sell a drug called Glitter that her father is hooked on so that she can get facial surgery in order to leave Versailles once and for all. She never wanted the life that she’s living now. Honestly, it kind of makes me want to watch Breaking Bad.

Did I mention that there’s futuristic technology in this world? It’s pretty awesome. I don’t want to get too into it because I kind of want you to explore these gadgets yourself through reading.

If you couldn’t tell already, I loved Glitter by Aprilynne Pike. I can’t wait for more!
