If I Taught A YA Lit Course || Top Ten Tuesday

Hey guys! Today the theme is back to school related, so I decided to do a list of books I’d make students read if I were to teach a young adult literature course! There’s not exactly ten books, but there are ten topics and books I’d want people to read based on those topics.

Classic Contemporaries

Don’t Ever Change by M. Beth Bloom // Because You’ll Never Meet Me by Leah Thomas // Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour // None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio // Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

The Future of Earth

After the Red Rain by Barry Lyga with Peter Facinelli and Robert DeFranco // Feed by M.T. Anderson // Gone by Michael Grant

Poetic Novels/Novels That Are Written Beautifully

Dating Down by Stefanie Lyons // Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler

Video Games & The Digital World

Armada by Ernest Cline // Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky

Historical Novels

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray // Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly

Graphic Novels

In Real Life by Cory Doctorow & Jen Wang // Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Humor (because laughter is the best medicine)

Beauty Queens by Libba Bray // Noggin by John Corey Whaley

172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad // Gated by Amy Christine Parker // Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

What if the government controlled your life?

Matched by Ally Condie // Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

What books would you let students read if you taught a YA lit class?
  1. I would totally let students read Twilight and The Fault in Our Stars. 🙂

  2. Some of these are on my TBR. I'd definitely enjoy your class 😛
    Great list!
I'd probably let my students read All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven 🙂

    Here's my TTT @ Swissbookworm

  3. I have read none of these. I think I might fail your class. I would probably include best social media presence, and best self-published.

  4. Oooh very nice variety! Pretty much all are new to me ones in a sense, except for Anna Dressed in Blood! Great picks!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  7. I do own Revolution, need to read it soon. Anna Dressed in Blood was really good, I need to read the sequel. Also I can not believe that I haven read the Gone series , I always see those books and tell myself that I want them but I never bought them.
After the Red Rain sounds really good.

This would be a fun class, why didn't I have a YA lit class lol? Don't Ever Change, Gated – some good stuff here. Plus graphic novels!

I've read Matched but not Uglies.

  10. Where can I sign up for your class? 🙂
